Project
Briefly describe your intended project.
For my project, I intend on hosting a fundraiser for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This fundraiser will most likely be holding a lemonade stand but I am also thinking of doing some other fundraiser in conjunction (especially if I hold it outside of school). Currently I am considering holding a stand at a school event, but due to approval issues, I am also thinking of holding it with my church or as a part of a lacrosse team event (subject to my coach’s approval). I will mostly be working independently, though workers from Alex’s Lemonade Stand are willing to guide me through the process.

Project Outcome or Goal
Since my topic deals with pediatric cancer, I wanted to somehow relate my project back to the topic. I will use my product to demonstrate my topic by donating my time and efforts to benefit children who are affected by such a deadly and baffling illness at such a young age. Though I will not be working directly with children who have cancer, I feel that by donating my time and hosting a fundraiser gives me more knowledge about pediatric cancer on a more personal level, knowledge I can use in my research.

Project Completion Strategies
I have a lot to do before I complete my project. Currently I am in contact with someone from the organization who can guide my through hosting my stand. As of right now, I first need to figure out where I am hosting my stand and when. Once I figure these two out, I can move forward and determine whether or not I need to host another fundraiser in conjunction. After that, it is all planning towards hosting my stand, publicizing with my friends, family and the school to gain support.

Project Resources and Materials
Obviously I will need a lot of lemonade mix, water and cups. I am also going to need to location to host my stand, preferably somewhere public. I also need people to help me run the stand, a job I hope my family can help out with. I am not sure about how many hours I am willing to dedicate towards running the stand, but in order to get a maximum profit, I plan on running the stand for at least an entire afternoon.

Research
Research Topic:
I plan on researching pediatric cancer and its effects on the community. I chose this topic because I wanted to research something I knew very little about but could keep me interested. I also wanted my topic to correlate with my project, an area where I knew I wanted to help people.

Essential Question:
Does a child with pediatric cancer bring the community together?

Prior Experience:
I have not had any prior experience with this topic.

Research Benefits:
I will benefit from learning about different types of pediatric cancers, as will my classmates. This knowledge could help them in adulthood when they become parents.

Potential Sources:
Currently I am in contact with Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a group founded by a little girl with pediatric cancer wanting to help other kids like her. I feel like Alex’s Lemonade Stand will be extremely helpful in getting information. Other sources I plan to associate with include the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, THON, and also try to talk to local doctors and what they’ve seen in terms of pediatric cancer.
